XJS, XJSC

From an original planning concept of the replacement for the E Type an early prototype of the XJ-S was called the XK-F. However, anticipated stricter laws for open cars in the USA and elsewhere made Jaguar opt for a coupe only. Consequently a more prestigious Grand Tourer with high speed and comfort being balanced rather than an out and out sports car was developed.

The tried and true V12 5.3l motor was to power XJ-S from its release in 1975 unchanged until 1981 when the XJS-HE was introduced. The new high-efficiency cylinder head was designed to improve the car's less than special fuel economy.
A few relatively minor changes were made at the time however it was not until 1984 any other substantial alternations were made.

A cabriolet model gave the Jaguar driver a sniff of open top motoring again. By 1988, laws and design engineers had overcome many of the problems for open top cars and Jaguars first convertible for 12years, the XJSC was released.

A stunning vehicle then and as with many other Jaguar models, equally good nine years later.

The various engines available during and towards the end of its production life extended an enhanced this very strongly built Grand Tourer. Success at the hands of the Tom Walkinshaw Racing Team in Europe and USA and here at Bathurst certainly did no harm to Jaguar's reputation.

For a car seen by some as a bit un-Jaguar like, its 21 year build period, (the longest of any jaguar model), suggests the buying public appreciated this lovely, handsome car.
